The Vergers Guild of the Episcopal Church (VGEC) is a service organization that supports the ministry of vergers, sacristans, worship leaders, altar guild members, and more. Although the position may have many different names, we all identify with the historic name and work of the verger.
A verger is a member of a church who works under the direction of their rector, vicar, or priest-in-charge, to assist with the organization and operation of worship services in the Episcopal Church in the United States, the Anglican Church of Canada, the Church of England, and world-wide throughout the Anglican Communion. There are vergers in many other churches as well and all are welcome.
Through our training course, online resources, annual conferences, chapters, and opportunities for fellowship, the VGEC supports over one thousand active members around the world. If you are interested in getting started with a new verger ministry in your parish, see Starting a new Verger Ministry.
Becoming a member of the Vergers Guild is easy. It only costs $40 per year and provides a large number of benefits for your work in the church. We also have a free six-month trial membership for new members.

“The ministry of the vergers is to help to lead the church in bearing witness in the world to the hospitality of God, by helping the church to be a truly hospitable place, by helping us to worship the Lord our God in dignity, in order, in beauty, and in truth in the church so that we can go forth to witness to that God to the world.”
