General Conference Information

This year we are trying something totally new for our annual conference.  We are focusing on a spiritual-centered retreat with time for fellowship, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

Listening to you about past conferences, we are trying this model this year.  This conference will feature less structured time, lower cost, centralized conference center location, and opportunities for reflection, fellowship, fun, and worship.
  • Come and join your fellow vergers in the piney woods of Texas for a relaxing, retreat weekend at Camp Allen on Thursday, October 24 to Sunday, October 27, 2019. No rooms at Camp Allen are available before or after these dates.

  • RETREAT PRICING IS ALL-INCLUSIVE. This includes airport shuttles, rooms for three nights, all meals, snacks, ice cream social, Texas BBQ bash, and more.

  • Rooms at Camp Allen are either single or double occupancy. All rooms have two beds. The double occupancy rate is $400 per person for the conference and the single occupancy rate is $550 per person for the conference. During registration you can specify your roommate or request one to be assigned.

  • There are only 145 rooms available for the conference.  We highly encourage your prayerful consideration of sharing a room to allow for maximum attendance at this year’s conference.

  • The VGEC provides a limited number of scholarships of $100 each which are intended to help develop the ministry of the verger and will be considered for new or youth vergers, first time conference attendees, and those with a financial need. You can apply for a scholarship when you register for the conference.

Seminars

The 2019 VGEC Annual Conference includes several seminars designed to be interesting for both vergers and guests:
  • Keynote Address: "How to maintain a spiritual life when I work for the Church" with The Rt. Rev. Andrew Doyle, Bishop of Texas

  • Confessions of an Episcopal Evangelist with Molly Carnes
    • Molly Carnes will share her experience of leaving a 25-year corporate career and becoming a vocational evangelist. As a church finder, Molly helps seekers wounded by their church experience return to Christian community all over the country. This ministry has shown her the unique position of the Episcopal Church in today's world and the unique opportunity we have before us.
    • She served at St. Mary's in Cypress, Texas, as Connections Missioner for three and half years and is also a certified facilitator for Invite Welcome Connect, an evangelism model offered through the Beecken Center at University of the South. Driven by the importance and beauty of story, Molly will redefine the "E" word and share concrete ways you can welcome the stranger in our midst.

  • Digital Literacy for Ministry with The Rev. Stacy Williams-Duncan, Interim Director of Digital Learning, Virginia Theological Seminary
    • More details coming soon!

  • How and why I built LectionaryPage.net with Kelly Puckett
    • Hear how Kelly (a non-technical guy) took a small idea for a weekly Bible study resource and built it into a resource that is used weekly by thousands of Episcopal churches
    • How is it used and what does the future look like for the site?

  • Verger 101 with Duke DuTeil, Training Advisor for the VGEC
    • Designed to support the new verger (those who have been vergers three years or less or first-time conference attendees)
    • Topic include:
      • I thought being a Verger was all about wearing robes, holding virges, and processing through the nave
      • What is meant by "Ministry of Welcome?"
      • Soldiering On: Dealing with mistakes so no one notices
      • Hands-On: Carrying the virge, what to wear when, serving in the background, working with your Altar Guild, volunteer coordination, being the boss/servant at the same time
      • Is the VGEC Training Course for me?
